The latest new mess
Okay, so I’ve gone on and on about all the weirdness of setting up these new websites and all the old content that needs to be ported over and all that mess, but I’ve largely ignored an entirely DIFFERENT mess that’s bubbled up in the midst of all this: me moving over to a new computer. Yes, somehow in the midst of everything ELSE that’s changing, I’ve found myself trying to migrate over to a brand new computing rig. And I’m not gonna lie, it’s turning out to be SUPREMELY frustrating. It needed to happen sooner or later, my old comp is just one stiff breeze away from collapsing into a pile of dust and rust… and that’s half the problem. I’d hoped I could just move everything I’ve been using over to the new machine, but it turns out the old rig is SO old that none of my art programs are even capable of running on the new one. I’ve picked up some newer stuff, but now I have to, you know, actually learn how to use it. And I am very much an old dog, so even the most insignificantly new trick will take me a loooooooong time to get down. It’s probably gonna take me weeks just to finish learning what side of the screen to start looking for stuff.
Long story short: as if all the site setup and archive migration wasn’t eating up enough time as it is, now we also have to deal with me struggling to get used to these newfangled programs. Expect new comics to be VERY occasional and EXTREMELY simple & sloppy until I can get a better feel for what does what. Well, if nothing else, I suppose the decision to put Far Out There on hiatus for a while just got a million times more justified. Conventional Wisdom can afford to look a bit sloppy or go without photo backgrounds for a bit, but there is NO way I’d be able to produce a decent page of Far Out There at the moment.
Oh, and speaking of Conventional Wisdom, the latest page will probably turn out to be the final one edited on the old computer. I HAD hoped to throw myself into the deep end and force myself to learn, but everything is SO disorienting that I just didn’t trust myself to get all those gradients and colors right. In fact, I was THIS close to scrapping the original idea and just drawing an angry Yoink demanding that I explain what the original idea WAS going to be. Something I could just ink and slap text on and post with minimal fuss. But then, every time I try to deliberately avoid fuss, significant additional fuss results, so I just went ahead and did the thing on the old computer. That’s gonna be the page any new people stumbling onto the comic over the weekend will see, so I’d like it to be a little more than an apology.
